I discovered these books by accident back in November 2011. I had heard very little about them despite the film coming out in March 2012, but I wanted to read them anyway. As a christmas present I received the first book in the trilogy called 'The Hunger Games'. Two more books follow called 'Catching Fire' and 'Mocking Jay'. I really really enjoyed reading 'The Hunger Games' and found that I got addicted to it quickly. I am currently reading the second book 'Catching Fire' and i'm addicted. It's so good. These books are set in a Dystopian World, which isn't to everyone's taste, so if you don't like those sort of novels, then the 'Hunger Games' aren't for you. Even if you don't like those kind of books, I would give these books a chance. They really are fantastic. Plus, the movie comes out on 23rd March, so you could watch the film first and then decide if you would like to read the books.
Plot :
The basic storyline is that there are 12 districts and the head place (or government run city, if you will) called The Capitol all exist in this Dystopian World. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12 with her mother and 12 year old sister Prim. She has one very close best friend called Gale (played by the very handsome Liam Hemsworth in the movie!) and each year each child's name (up to the age of 18 i think) is entered in to a competition called 'The Hunger Games'. It is run by the Capitol and President Snow has complete control over the games. 2 champions are chosen from each district and will face competitors from the other 11 districts in the games arena and fight to their death. Only one person can win and be crowned 'The Hunger Games Champion'. Peeta Mellark is chosen from District 12 and Prim, Katniss' sister. Katniss volunteers herself as tribute to district 12 to fight along side Peeta Mellark as she feels that Prim is too young to die. Peeta and Katniss enter into the world of the arena and fight with the other 22 tributes from the other districts to win, but only one comes out....
I hope that that short summary makes you want to read the books because you will not be disappointed at all. They are brilliant.
